Edgar the Ætheling

Edgar the Ætheling, son of an older half-brother of Edward the Confessor, (they had different mothers) was one of the contenders for the English crown – it is thought he was just 14 years old at this time!

Even though he was one of the main contenders for the throne there was too strong much competition and he was never crowned. Edgar lived on into the twelfth century and was probably in his seventies when he died. He was often at court and lived a comfortable life even if he did not become king.

How would you feel if you had to become a ruler at only fourteen years old?
