Warwick Courier: Hannah Owens attends Buckingham Palace

A budding poet at Princethorpe College visited Buckingham Palace to attend the final of a Remembrance poetry and art competition after she won it last year.

Hannah Owens, 17, won the ‘Never Such Innocence’ competition with her poem ‘Dear Ivy’ in 2017. The competition, which has been held every year since 2014, gives young people the chance to commemorate the First World War by writing poetry and creating art.

The Directory Group: Maddie Macey reads poem at commemoration the centenary anniversary of the Armistice

One of the highlights was the reading of a poem ‘A Holiday’ which appears in a new book entitled ‘Never Such Innocence’.  The poem was composed by Churcher’s Sixth Form pupil, Maddie Macey who this week was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace for all those published in this book.  The royal reception was one of a huge number events going on around the world at this time, close to the 11th of the 11th, 100 years since the end of the 1st World War.

Three schoolgirls whose heroic relatives served in World War I and sacrificed their lives have shared what Remembrance Day means to them.

The youngsters, Molly Meleady-Hanley, Maisy Dabell and Erin Thomas, who are among the winners in a 'Thank You' creative competition run by The Royal British Legion and Never Such Innocence, tell how their ancestors' bravery moved them.

Lancashire Evening Post: Chorley student Morrigan commissioned to create library's permanent First World War art project

Morrigan Atherton, from Chorley, was tasked with the project after winning first place at the Never Such Innocence Awards for the artwork Behind Each Man, showing a soldier in the trenches.

She has now been commissioned to draw a large First World War drawing which will be on continuous display at Horwich Heritage Centre.

A poem written by a St Joseph’s College student Lia Taylor pleading with people to learn lessons from the Great War has won her a special trip to Germany.

She will also attend a reception hosted by Sir Sebastian Wood KCMG, British Ambassador to Germany, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, President of Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (VDK) and the Never Such Innocence organisation.

A special service commemorating Irishmen awarded the Victoria Cross during the First World War took place in Belfast this weekend.

Two schoolchildren won the chance to recite poems at this event that they had written as part of the Never Such Innocence competition – a project which engages young people in the First World War centenary.
