From an early age, Vera began singing and performing, even joining a singing troupe for kids.  In 1939, she released a song called ‘We’ll Meet Again’ which talked about people being separated because of the war.  In 1941, she was given her own radio show on BBC that was meant to provide a morale boost to all who were listening.

In 1944, she joined the Entertainment National Services Association, which sent musicians around the world to encourage troops that were far from home and fighting in very difficult places.  One of places she went was Burma (now Myanmar) where the British military was met with very challenging battles. She was nicknamed, ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ as she reminded the soldiers of the people who were at home that they were fighting for - mothers, sisters and wives.  Vera is still alive, 102 years old as of January 2020.
