Living through the conflict

Different people from different communities and identities experienced the war in different ways. It is not possible to do justice to all the voices of the Colombian conflict, but here are a few which will hopefully help us understand.

The armed conflict caused widespread displacement across the countryside, forcing entire families and communities to leave their homes and their land and head to the cities, where they faced very difficult conditions adapting to the new environment and with no place to call their own. Although the majority of the violence happened in rural areas the cities weren’t always safe either.
